“In this series, I have worked with ripping up leftover materials from clothing production, giving them a new form by weaving with them. In between the leftover materials I have woven with patterned linen threads. The patterned threads are made using a technique called ikat, which I learned from a master weaver in India. It is a very slow process, where you start by measuring the threads and then tie around them in specific patterns. The threads are then dyed and the tied areas are untied again – in this way the threads will still be white in the former tied areas. The finished woven works create an interaction with light when hanging in backlight. With this work I have gathered a lot of different references and experiences – from the rag rug tradition I learned from my grandmother, to the ikat technique I learned far away from home, to classic weaving materials such as linen and new shiny plastic threads.
In my work, the loom is always the starting point. The loom sets a lot of boundaries and has a very specific system and set of rules. But this system and the limitations that the loom provides sparks my creativity and gives me an endless amount of new ideas. For me it feels like the loom and I are creating together, and I love exploring the limitations of the loom and also challenge them”.
