“The core of my work is earth pigments. A core that is grounded in the natural and cultural context of Denmark. Pigments that have been used for thousands of years but have slowly been forgotten and synthetically replaced. Through my work I explore how these natural and lightfast colors can once again be brought to life in a contemporary but conscious manner. My piece “Clad in Ochre” explores the possibility of using Danish ochre pigment as a brick glaze. In doing so two old Danish industries are merged: ochre and bricks. In according to their respective crafts, the bricks are handmade, burned and glazed, then stacked and now lie ready to be used.
The crafts, materials, and industries that I employ the pigments within are chosen based on their respect for natural materials, crafts, and heritage. The tool I’ve chosen to showcase is a mold for brickmaking. This ancient tool is simple, easy to use and with it a skilled brick laborer can produce upwards of a 1000 bricks a day. An industrial application, where the maker and the material are at the center”.
